Sealants and Dental Health

While brushing and flossing are extremely effective in removing food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces, it can often be difficult to clean the grooves and depressions in back teeth as thoroughly.

That’s where sealants come in.

Sealants offer protection to the chewing surfaces of vulnerable teeth and help maintain optimal dental health.

Continue reading for everything you need to know about sealants and dental health.

What Is the Connection Between Sealants and Dental Health?

Sealants are thin, plastic coatings that are designed to protect vulnerable back teeth from food particles and decay.

They are typically painted on the chewing surfaces of permanent molars and premolars, where they bind to depressions and grooves and form a seal that keeps plaque and food out.

In doing so, sealants reduce the risk of decay and cavities. They also promote good oral health in areas of the mouth that can be harder to clean with brushing and flossing alone.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Sealants?

If you are interested in the benefits of sealants and dental health, you may be wondering who’s a good candidate for this treatment.

Sealants are usually well-suited to children and teens and are able to protect molars and premolars during the cavity-prone years of six-to-14.

Sealants can also be useful for adults who don’t have any cavities or tooth decay.

How Are Sealants Applied?

Sealant application is a relatively quick and easy process.

To start, teeth are cleaned and then thoroughly dried with a cotton ball or other absorbent material wrapped around the tooth.

Next, acid is used to roughen the teeth and help sealants bond to grooves and depressions.

Teeth are then rinsed and dried again, before sealant is painted on to the teeth.

Sealant immediately bonds to teeth and hardens with or without the assistance of a curing light.
