In case you experience severe pain or have a painful appliance problem you can’t take care of yourself or have an orthodontic emergency, please contact our office. We will be able to schedule an appointment to resolve your problem.
Some quick tips can solve may problems by yourself temporarily. If you have a loose bracket or wire or you loosen or break an appliance, put it inside a plastic bag or container and bring it with you during your next appointment. A broken or poking wire may be bent in with a pencil eraser or cut with the clippers given to you in your initial Emergency Kit.
If orthodontic appliances are dislodged or displaced, we will need to replace or adjust the appliances as soon as possible. So after alleviating your discomfort, it is very important that you still call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem.
General soreness that occurs soon after a new appliance or your braces are placed is normal and temporary. If you feel that it’s necessary, try taking ibuprofen or other non-aspirin pain relievers, much as you would for a minor headache. If you have irritation caused by one of your wires, you can often resolve it by simply moving the wire away from your cheek using a cotton swab or a clean eraser on the tip of a pencil. You can also cover the end of the wire with a small piece of wax to keep it from rubbing the inside of your cheek.
There will be irritation in the lips, cheeks, and tongue for one to two weeks as they learn a new posture and become accustomed to the surface of the braces. You can put wax on the braces to lessen this.
Headgear should be worn properly as instructed by your orthodontists or sometimes discomfort may occur. It’s important for you to follow instructions carefully so that, working together, we can achieve the best results from your treatment.
