Dental Implants: The Gold Standard

Versatile and predictable, dental implants for tooth replacement have been the gold standard since the early 1980’s. Dental implants are made of titanium, one of the most co-compatible materials on the market which means even an individual with a metal allergy is still a likely candidate for implant treatment. An implant functions as the root of the tooth and the top portion of the tooth can be a single crown, part of a bridge to replace multiple teeth or used for a denture or partial denture attachment.

Steps in implant treatment

  • Consultation with your GoSmiles dentist

  • CT Scan

  • Surgical guide

  • Sedation and surgery

  • Tissue and bone development with a temporary restoration in place

  • Final restoration

CT scan

At GoSmiles Dentistry, we want to make sure all treatment are done safely and comfortably for all patients. This is why doing a 3-D CT scan is critical. The 3-D scan will show the doctors anatomical structures such as your sinuses and nerves in order to properly place the implant.

Surgical guide

Once your personalized treatment plan is created and position of the implants are decided, a surgical guide may be used to ensure the exact placement of the implant. A surgical guide is made from the CT scan and are 3-D printed to ensure high accuracy along with safety for implant placement.

I.V. Sedation

At GoSmiles Dentistry, we strive to make your visits as comfortable and pain free as possible. We offer safe sedation options such as Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), Helcion (pill sedation) or I.V. sedation. Our GoSmile Dentistry will help you decide what is the best option for you.

How long does Implant treatment take?

The answer to this varies depending on the patient and full treatment plan and this is something your GoSmiles Dentist will discuss during your free consultation. However, once an implant can be placed, it takes roughly 3-6 months for healing before a permanent porcelain crown can be placed.

What is recovery like after having a dental implant placed?

Recovery after dental implant surgery depends on many factors. Everyone heals at their own rate. If you experience pain two to three weeks post-surgery, or are concerned whether the side effects you experience are normal, contact your Go Smiles General Dentist.

Following post-procedure instructions carefully after treatment can help reduce pain after your implant procedure. These instructions will include -

  • Taking a painkiller as needed following the procedure to reduce discomfort. The standard recommendation is 600mg every eight hours of Ibuprofen. If you still experience pain, let your dentist know so they can make other recommendations.

  • Placing an icepack on the cheek or lip as soon as you get home can help reduce swelling. Continue icing for the first 24 hours.

  • Rinse with warm salt water 2-3 times a day to help with inflammation and the healing process.

  • Avoid hard foods that can irritate the surgical site. Soft foods, such as smoothies, yogurt, eggs, jell-o, and ice cream are recommended.

  • Get plenty of rest. Strenuous activity can slow down the healing process and should be avoided a week after surgery.

At GoSmiles, we strive to make each dental procedure as painless as possible. Please contact us with any questions or concerns about your dental treatment.
