At your initial visit, Dr. Franklin will first discuss any concerns that you might have about the alignment of your teeth and bite. He will then perform a thorough evaluation of your teeth, soft tissues and facial proportions will then be performed. An X-ray (panoramic) of the jaws may be taken to check for missing, extra or impacted teeth. Dr. Franklin will review the clinical findings with you and make recommendations regarding the need for orthodontic treatment. If treatment is indicated, Dr. Franklin may request that diagnostic X-rays, photographs and study models be taken. A second appointment is usually required for these diagnostic records to be taken.

Let's Talk
A final consultation appointment will be made after the diagnostic records are taken. The purpose of this third visit is to summarize the findings from the diagnostic records and to discuss the specific plan for orthodontic treatment. The Treatment Coordinator will discuss the cost of treatment and assist you with the necessary financial arrangements. She will also assist you in the coordination of any preliminary treatment with your family dentist. If you are ready to begin your orthodontic treatment, an appointment will be made for the braces to be placed.

Making Smiles
Orthodontic treatment is done to correct a wide variety of problems. "Malocclusion" is a technical term for a "bad bite," and the bite is the first thing Dr. Franklin will consider in determining your need for treatment. Most malocclusions are inherited such as crowded teeth, spaced teeth, cleft palate, extra or missing teeth and irregularities of the jaws and face. Some malocclusions are developed through thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, extended use of a pacifier, premature loss of teeth, accidents or medical problems.
